hvx200p and final cut universal
Posted by Eben Kostbar on March 16, 2006 at 9:53 amhas anyone heard anything about how well importing the clips will be w/ the new final cut universal thats coming out in the next week or so. cause i’ve shot my short on the hvx and obviously need to get it edited and heard that only the fc version 5.0.4 will import p2 clips properly, however before investing that much money, i was thinking of waiting another week or so for the newer final cut universal to come out. also, i’m assuming that the fc universal will have no problems going on a non-intel based mac, cause i have a year old g5 dual 2.0. thanks for any help, eben

March 16, 2006 at 3:24 pmUniversal means just that, both Intel and Power PC.
It is rumored that a Final cut Pro studio 1.1 update will also be released over Software update to bring all “non universal” Power Pc versions to the same revision.
No info if any new features will be introduced in the Universal build, or we have to wait for FCP 6…

March 16, 2006 at 6:25 pmYou can get along with just 1 gig, but….
– Ram is pretty cheap theese days.
– You will get a much smoother experience with around 2GB.If I was in your shoes I would upgrade right away to 2GB

March 16, 2006 at 6:30 pmthxs a lot for the help. i have right now 4 256s, i believe there is only a total of 4 slots with the g5 2.0, right? so i would have to take out some of those and replace them with either 512s or 1gigs right? sorry i’m a novice at this, i’m trying to learn on the fly, i’m an actor now trying to learn about all the behind the scenes stuff and know only the basics. also what do u think is a resonable price i should pay for either the 512s or 1gig ram, just so i dont get ripped off when i go to the stores? txs again for the help

March 16, 2006 at 6:56 pmIf it’s the Original Dual 2 GHZ G5 I believe it’s got 2 x 4 slots.
It’s quite easy to tell. Just remove the alu side panel, and look thru the plexiglass. In the lower left corner, next to the front grill you’ll see the memory slots.I just bought 2x1GB for my old G5, now its at 3.5 GB. Currently it’s in use by another party editing a feature in DVCPRO HD 1080/25p. It started to report “Out of memory” with the old 1.5 GB so I bougt another 2GB. Now it’s much more fluid, especially entering and leaving the trim mode. Also Playback starts more rapidly from pause.

March 16, 2006 at 7:35 pmFootage looks great, but it’s should be. It’s originated on HDCAM 1080/25p using the Pro35 lens adapter with Zeiss highspeed Primes.
I paid $300 for the two sticks. It’s just standard kingston PC 3200/400 168pin DDR SDRAM. But I’m in Euroland.
OWC.com has a matched pair for $177:

March 16, 2006 at 7:47 pmyour awesome…sounds good about your footage, what the mov about? by the way do u know of a site to buy the fc pro 5 for cheap, cause i’m antsy and dont want to wait for the universal to come out, since i will obviously be using my mac to edit and since the universal is still a version 5. i just know i need the final cut version 5.0.4 for the p2 cards to be imported.

March 16, 2006 at 10:31 pmThe best option right now is to upgrade to the universal Studio package. It’s only $199 if you have FCP 4 or 4.5.
That will give you also give you DVD SP, Motion, Soundtrack Pro besides FCP 5.
My order at the Apple store says two weeks. So its pretty soon 🙂
