HVX200A – 720/23.98pA footage – any hope of converting to real 23.976?
Hi All,
I thought for sure I could figure this out, but I’m a little stuck. We had some footage shot, and halfway through the day the camera guy realized he was shooting 23.98pA – and then switched over to 23.98N. We’d like to work at everything in 23.98 (either in an Avid or FCP), but this little hitch is throwing us for a loop!
Any thoughts on the best way to work this out? Worst case scenario we just work at everything in 59.94 in FCP in realtime – but it’s a shame we have to do that just because 20% of our footage is all messed up.

Sure most NLEs support automated pulldown removal of 24pA footage- check out your manual.

There is no 720 24pA, there is 720 24p and 24pN, the 24p extra frames can really be removed with log and transfer.

24pA is an option at 1080 only. 720 offers 24p, meaning 24 frames in a 60 frame stream, or 24pN, meaning it shoots 24 ACTUAL fps…at 23.98.
There is no such thing as 720p 24pA…or 23.98pA.

Yeah I thought something sounded weird there- you would want to switch to CinemaTools if what you have is 24p over 60i.

Dave, I don’t see a big problem here. If your DP shot 23.98pA, it’s 1080pA23,98. Log and Transfer this with pulldown removal checked (the default setting). The captured clips are perfectly compatible with 720pN24 clips. Just scale them to fit the timeline (probably happens by default) and render if necessary.

Ahh, thanks guys – I knew I was banging my head up against the wall for some reason!
It’s definitely the 24p in a 60i stream – I don’t know why I was thinking it was pA. I’ve tried to fix it in cinema tools, but didn’t fair so well. My reverse telecine option is greyed out…but I think that’s because it’s 59.94, not 29.97.

Yeah, Cinema Tools cannot remove pulldown from 59.94…only 29.97.
BUT….look in the TOOLS menu in FCP. DVCPRO HD FRAME RATE CONVERTER will get you to 23.98 if you want.

Hey Shane – I tried that too – footage get’s very, very studdery. Even if I uncheck remove duplicate frames (then I just get a clip that’s slo-mo)…I get nothing really usable!
I figured I’d check here, you all run into this stuff more then I do! I really appreciate the insight you all offer on here!

Yah, I know. I guess I believed the OP when he said pA, which would IMPLY 1080. In retrospect, that was a poor assumption. I’ll be quiet now.
