I’m going to be using a HVX200 on monday for the first time for a shoot. I would like to use it with the DVCPRO50 codec in plain old 480i mode, connecting my mac via firewire and capturing live video as we shoot. My question is, can I get this format right out of the firewire connection or do I have to use a P2 card? FCP says it will capture DVCPRO50 through firewire but everything I read about this camera is about how to get stuff off of the P2 cards. Since I want to capture directly, I don’t really need the P2 cards, do I?

I have no idea what the answer to this question is, but due to morbid curiosity, I just have to ask: why are you using an HVX200 to shoot 480i material? Is there something about the HVX which makes it ideal for this? (I’ve never used one before). To me it sounds a bit like overkill.

Yeah, I don’t doubt that its odd choice, but here’s how I arrived at this camera. Our producer has a good releationship with a particular rental source, so I’m limited to the dozen or so cameras they have available. I wanted to capture in 4:2:2 through firewire and the DVCPRO50 format seemed to be the only way to do that. The only camera the rental place has with both DVCPRO50 and firewire is the HVX200. So now I have to figure out how to make it work.

Set the camera up to shoot DVCPRO 50 internally on the camera.

Connect the camera to your computer via firewire. Have it on when you launch FCP.

When you open FCP, choose DV50 NTSC in the Easy Setups. Open the capture tool. Set device control to UNCONTROLLED DEVICE, set your Scratch Disk destination and hit CAPTURE NOW when you are ready to capture.

If you are using a laptop, you will have to get a PCMCIA firewire adapter as all the firewire ports share the same bus, and you will drop frames if you have the camera and drive connected via the same bus.
