HVX200 NTSC + PAL

October 9, 2006 at 6:58 amWell, if you want to shoot HD progressive, you can make it compatible to some degree.
There’s a little hack to the scene files from Barry Green (I think you can find it here on the list) which makes a European model run at a speed very close 24 fps. We use it all the time, but for film-out. Be sure to test the whole workflow before buying, since there might be sound-sync issues.
Apart from that: no NTSC modes on the camera.
You might have to buy Sonys Z1 and Panasonic will loose a client for this otherwise fantastic camera…

Be sure to test the whole workflow before buying, since there might be sound-sync issues….”You would lose the ability to record audio on the camera but if you are shooting dual system, this isn’t such a big deal, you just need to make sure you can bring audio and image back together. I am not certain as to how it edits though. Uli, since you do it all the time, what is the frame rate for editing and ingest, is it 23.98? Obviously this is a PN mode. But since in the PAL countries going from 25 frame to 24 frame has been doen for years and years for filmmaking, seems to me that there is not such a huge problem here.

But then you would not have the ability to record in progressive modes as the Z1 camera does not have progressive modes, it is strictly an interlace capture. Additionally its 24 frame cinemode is just purely unuseable mostly due to the HDV algorithm, better to record in 60i and then put it through Magic Bullet to get 24 frame look. If your objective is to make films then you should start with a camera that captures the image progressively, there is just more resolution there to start with.

October 9, 2006 at 3:37 pmWe are using the preset for 24 fps. Actually the speed is closer to this (a tad above 24) than to 23,98. And, yes, we are using separate sound and a good old clapper.
You are absolutely right, Jan, about progressive. If one needs progressive in the end, there is nothing better than a camera with progressive chips. Everything else iseither inferior (like Sonys pseudo frame-mode) or time consuming (like good, adaptive de-interlacing in post).
