  • HVX200 / Firestore… I need very basic setup help.

    Hello,

I have finally had a chance to look at my new HVX200 (PAL version) and my new Firestore. Bought it a few months ago, but I’ve been out sick, so haven’t looked at it or any forums either. I did not buy any P2 cards. Now I’m trying to figure this stuff out, and I have to admit I’m having problems. I guess it’s especially hard for me since I got 2 new products at the same time (actually 3, if you count my new Matrox AXIO), and if something isn’t working, I’m unsure if I’m doing something wrong on the camera or the Firestore!! Are there any REALLY basic websites that describe in detail every setting and how to make these 2 work together in all modes? The manuals are confusing to me, since I am not an experienced videographer. I found one description how to record 24pN with Firestore, but I don’t have that on the PAL version. Tried instead to record DVCPROHD 1080i, and picked settings as best I could, but when trying to play back and look at clip the camera doesn’t recognize the format. I know I’m doing something wrong, but I don’t know what. Please help.

Be sure to download and install the latest firmware for your Firestore.

It does not record 24pN. No firewire output from the HVX200 in that mode.

Thanks, I did that, and that helped! Now I was able to record DVCProHD 1080i50, and play it back and look at it on the camera’s LCD. I still wouldn’t mind finding out if there are any good websites with good instructions for settings and workflow for the combination HVX200 / Firestore. Any tips appreciated.
    Thanks again!

    Kind regards,
    Eric

I, too, am interested in this. Myself and a buddy are attempting to make some indie features using this camera and any tips would be very appreciated.

I know what you mean about new equipment and needing help. I have set up a FireStore FS 100 with HVX200. Here are some tips below. I have a longer MS-Word document that has complete instructions. Send me an e-mail at pada@livinglovefellowship.org and I will send it to you or anyone else who would like it.

    The short version is:

On the HVX 200 Camera, in the Camera Mode, use Menu Button
go to 9. Other Functions menu, Down to 1394 Control
Select EXT or BOTH (but if you have no cards, just use EXT)

    FireStore Settings

    Use Navigation Buttons for Menus
    In the HDD Mode Menu
    Select DVCPROHD REC

    In the DV FORMATS menu
    Select P2

    In the CONTROL menu
    Select TAPELESS

You can control the FireStore from the Camera’s REC/Pause buttons,or on the FireStore’s transport buttons. I like using the FireStore controls best, because it will make just one clip until I push the stop button twice. Until then the Stop button just pauses the recording, and when you push Record on the FireStore’s transports it continues the previous clip. If you use the camera’s controls, it makes a new clip EACH time. Depends what I’m shooting which works best.

Also every 2 minutes 18 seconds the FireStore makes a new clip automatically which you have to assemble in a sequence in FCP. I re-export these as Full Quality QT not to have to deal with the pieces.

Remember that BEFORE importing into FCP, you will need to run the “ORGANIZE P2” in the UTILITIES menu on the FireStore. Then connect it to your computer using the DD function.

Good luck, it is a dream, except for those pesky new files every 2 minutes.

    Thanks pada01!

This is great help, and I’m taking you up on your offer about the Word-document. I’ll send you an email.

    Thanks again,
    Eric
