  • HVX200 – Component out – live?

I do a lot of talking head stuff. Usually setup in one spot and run interviews through, speeches, etc. I do a mixture of DV and HD (720/24pN). Since I am usually the interviewer as well as camera guy it would be nice to have an external monitor, but right now I really cannot afford a portable HD monitor.

    Here’s my question –
I know that the 200 will downconvert an HD signal through the Component outs on playback, but will it do it live?

Bonus ? – I am looking at a used Sony PVM-8045Q. Would this work for a confidence monitor? I know that for critical work it is not up to the task, but just for monitoring shot composition during interviews? This is assuming that the component outs are live.

    Thanks

Component out is live and yes you can set it to downconvert.

Not sure what our budget is but there are some cheaper LCD monitors coming out that accept the HD signal. Swift (sold be varizoom) makes a 8″ LCD that takes the Panasonic batteries. Great confidence monitor.

There are some less expensive ones on the market but I have this one and like it.

I use a PVM-8045 quite a bit and it looks awesome. You can feed it component, s-video or composite from the HVX200. Component is notably sharper.

Your wife will like you more is you spend less. I own this one and the image is great and it is only $800 instead of the $1300.

Another option would be Firewire out to a laptop running software like Scopebox, which I use. Certainly not for judging color by eye, but neither are most of the other lcd options. The huge advantage is the ability to use waveform, vector, RGB parade and other scopes, as well as monitor audio levels. You can also record direct to disk if you want to. It’s not a run and gun solution, but for interview set ups like you describe I’ve found it really useful, and I think my images have improved as a result.

There is also Adobe’s On Location for the Windows world, and another Mac product, Capture Magic HD. The latter is cheaper than Scopebox (the HD version), but they have been totally unresponsive to my inquiries, where as the folks at Scopebox are VERY responsive. When I first tried their demo I found a problem with the zebra settings and wrote them an email. They answered in about one hour, and four hours later sent me an update. Problem fixed.

    David
