Hi everyone…I’m really close to pulling the trigger on buying the HVX200, but was just reading that it captures 720p at 960×720. My final deliverable needs to be 1280×720. I have to think that other people have encountered this concern, but a search of the forum didn’t net me anything on it. Has anyone else encountered this concern and how do you deal with a camera that doesn’t capture the full 720 resolution needed? Am I being needlessly worried? For what it’s worth, I’m editing in FCP6. Thank you in advance.

All HD formats are anamorphic. So 1280×720 is really 960×720 squeezed. This isn’t only true for DVCPRO HD, but all HD formats, as I said. Now, 1920×1080 formats are usually 1440×1080 squeezed, but DVCPRO HD goes a BIT farther and makes it 1280×1080.

What is your final deliverable on? Tape? data file?

Shane – thanks for responding. My final deliverable is a data file.

I believe the RED camera will be shooting a true square pixel at all resolutions.

But as Shane explained it is for the most part anamorphic.

So, excuse my newbie-ism, but are you guys saying I have nothing to worry about? Is there anything I need to be conscious of in making sure I have 1280×720 in my final outputted project?

What they’re saying is that several of the most popular HD formats don’t store a “full” image. HDcam stores 1440×1080 and plays it out as 1920×1080, DVCPro100 (What you plan on shooting on the HVX) stores 1280×720 as 960×720 or stores 1920×1080 as 1280×1080 for 30fps or 1440×1080 for 25fps.

If you are using FCP, you could either bring the material in natively and edit it as 960×720 (space savings and speedy reponse) and export the final file as 1280×720 for delivery.

There are formats that don’t run anamorphic…HDV1 which is 1280×720 stores a full image, but color subsamples at 4:2:0, D5HD stores a full image as far as I know, and HDcamSR certainly stores a full size image…as well as most HDSDI outboard recording devices (RAVE HD, S-Two, Convergent Design’s upcoming Flash XDR, etc…).

If I’m not mistaken, I was under the impression that AVC Intra was full frame res…

When you do your final output assuming it’s to a data file you can reset the aspect ratio to 1280×720- say for uncompressed 10 bit or prores. It will all scale from DVCPROHD properly and look fine.

[Tim Kolb] “If I’m not mistaken, I was under the impression that AVC Intra was full frame res…”

AVC-Intra at the “production quality” 100mbps rate is full-frame res, 1920×1080 or 1280×720. But in the “economy” 50mbps mode it does the same type of pre-filtering as DVCPRO-HD; 1440×1080 or 960×720.

    Hi Barry,

As I recall, DVCPro pre-filters to 1440 in PAL, (25 fps), but 1280 in NTSC (30fps), So here in the US, it’s 1280 X 1080 or 960 X 720. But of course this is all transparent to the user, so back to the original question, it does pre-filter in the recording codec, but it still outputs at 1920 or 1280, so it doesn’t matter.

    That’s how DVCPRO-HD did it, yes, but I was talking about how AVC-Intra 50-megabit pre-filters. With AVC-Intra at 50 megabits you get 1440×1080 or 960×720. With AVC-Intra at 100 megabits it’s full-raster 1920×1080 or 1280×720.
