Wondering if anyone has been successful in working with this scenario??? Using a deck (Panasonic 1200A) to record to tape during an interview set-up?

Here’s the situation…have a doc shoot this week and in theory we should be able to record to a deck from the camera??? The shoot and footage being captured is too much to be worrying about recording to P2 cards or to a Firestore…transfer time to load off footage is not possible. Thinking the easiest scenario would be to just record to a deck through firewire. Has anyone accomplished this way of recording?

Yes it can be done. You could also record live over Firewire into a Mac running FCP in live capture mode.

I recently shot a single-camera interview with a former Hawaii governor using three 8-gig P2 cards and a Firestore. It went smoothly and without a hitch.

And how reliable would either option be..?

Both sound deeply scary to me!

A friend of mine who refuses to buy into the P2 card experience records live into FCP and has great luck with it. I always wonders how he shoots Broll and handheld or anywhere else that’s not a sit down or studio type of situation. He thinks p2 cards are insane, I think he’s insane.

Recording live into FCP would be impossible for the kind of critical, in the field, documentary work we do.

“Er… you know that bit where you cried those huge voluminous tears remembering your dead husband… Er, could you just do that again for us ‘cos my laptop had a bit of a hiccup.”

I hear you. I have no idea how he does it. I haven’t been on a shoot with him since he got the camera.
