HVX with Panasonic AJ-SD93
I own the Panasonic AJ-SD93 deck with all input and output options (component, SDI, and Firewire). Just double-checking: can I connect the analog component output of the HVX directly into the component input of the AJ-SD93 and use that deck in a studio recording situation? Also, are the analog outputs from the camera pre-compression or post-compression?

Yes as long as you are recording DVCPRO or DVCPRO50. The analog outputs are pre-compression.

To clarify, the HVX’s analog outputs can be configured to downconvert in-camera, so yes you could record on the DVCPRO50 deck directly from the camera. Obviously the deck can only record DVCPRO50, so you’d either want to set the camera to DV50 mode, or configure the analog outputs to downconvert into a signal that the deck supports.

Using the firewire connection would probably give slightly better quality.

Jan and Barry, Would the Firewire out also have the downconversion? I have no need for analog on this deck at the moment. SDI possibly. Is the downconversion letterboxed, and how would you judge it’s quality? This is a setup I am seriously considering, having already ordered the HVX-200. The SD-93 would seem to be a great way to distribute SD versions on DVCPro 50 and have the HD for future use.
