  • HVX – tape 16:9 or 4:3

Posted by David Vanderveken on December 1, 2009 at 6:04 pm

    Hello,
Sorry if this question seems rather stupid. For the first time I recorded on tape with the HVX-201 (PAL version).
It seems that I’ve recorded 4:3 instead of 16:9.
In Sony Vegas the footage shows as 4:3 in a PAL widescreen template.
It also shows a very small black line on top of the footage (but that could be a technical problem on the camera itself?)
I’ve read the manual but can’t find anything about settings that change the recording to 16:9 or 4:3 for tape recording OR when recording to P2.

Has it got something to do with 576i/25p or 576i/50i rec format (tape)?

    Thank you for your time.
    David

I have found the settings in the manual. Still not shure about:

-The difference between ‘Letterbox’ and ‘Squeeze’. Is Letterbox a true 16:9 or does it just but the black bands on the footage?

    – The small black line on top of the footage (recorded in 4:3) when viewed in Sony Vegas.

    Thank you.

Letterbox= matted 4:3- never, ever use as you can easily do this in post. Squeeze = 16:9 anamorphic, that’s what you want.

I need to transfer from a tape on my Panasonic HVX200a to a Mac Pro / Final Cut Pro v5. The HVX200a camera manual says how to capture from P2 cards but not tape. Help!
