January 10, 2006 at 2:41 amout on the road this is kind of tricky.
Is the camera not able to record to two mediums at once? -

January 10, 2006 at 3:18 amHave a look at the brochure- only DV goes to tape. All other HD and DVCPRO50 formats go to P2, Firewire and the video outputs only.

[michael] “Does anyone know if the HVX200 can record HD to P2

January 10, 2006 at 6:33 amWell as a simple practical matter of design it’s not going to happen with the stock camera. The deck is DV only- you can’t software update new HD recording heads. But there’s nothing to stop you from running a P2 and Firestore and/or tethered HD tape deck. You have to give up a few things to get to this price point and that’s one of the main things.

I, and I doubt Michael, wasn’t suggesting that the tape drive could record HD, but only that it be available as a DV25 backup to HD and DV50 production. This would be particularly valuable when shooting DV50. Since we know that the HVX can downconvert to the component outputs while recording to P2 or hard disk, it’s only (in our minds) a short step to encoding to DV25 and turning on the tape drive.
Many folks are now shooting HD and delivering on SD to take advantage of the jump in SD quality, and a DV25 backup of HD production would not only serve that purpose but become an automatic off line asset, a huge selling point in my estimation.

January 11, 2006 at 12:33 amThe manual in pdf is now on the Panasonic web site. It appears it will not do dual recording although you can dump from the card to mini dv tape in SD dv format only.

January 13, 2006 at 12:52 amThere’s no provision for recording on P2 and tape at the same time; the tape drive doesn’t even appear to exist when you’re in P2 mode. You can’t even eject a tape when in P2 mode, so no, that’s not gonna happen.
