    Hi,

I currently own 2 HVX-200’s and 2 Z1U’s and I like them both. However we have a client who would like us to produce something that can be used for broadcast.

I’ve been reading and dissecting all of these formats and I’m am totally confused.

Are my cameras okay for broadcast? Like Discovery, PBS, HGTV etc…

Do I need to upgrade them or rent HD-XDCAM or the new 500’s by Panasonic?

We are producing a news style show so some will be shot in the studio and some will be shot on location.

So any thoughts, links and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I use the HVX-200 mixed with footage from the Varicam for broadcast. But you have to ask the broadcaster what they’ll accept. Some only want a % of the project to be shot with the smaller CCD HVXs. A majority of the footage they insist be Varicam.

But, as I said, you need to talk to the broadcaster.

    Hi Shane,

Thanks for the input. So would if we were going to invest in some new cameras to be used as our main cams during the shooting what would you recommend us using an XDCAM/HDV work flow using a Sony PDWF330 (or something else) as our main with Z1U’s as our B-roll camera or would you recommend using a AG-HPX500 with the HXV200’s as our B-roll camera.

Once again thanks for the input!

As Shane says- you would be kinda going around backwards. Ask the broadcaster what they’ll accept before buying a camera. Some may balk at XDCAM or DVCPROHD for example. Though in my opinion either camera- with a good lens and of course good operating would be fine for many broadcasters.

I’ve worked with a few different broadcasters and its always different and usually outlined in the contract as percentages. but a lot of it is subjective. one company i worked with said no small format HD (FX1 or Z1), but changed their minds after they saw the footage because it was shot better than they expected. some will be hard asses and say only “true HD” meaning a CineAlta at 1080i, not even a Varicam at 720p. but this attitude is changing.

i have not shot the XDCAM (i’m a little scared off by its compression scheme), but i imagine it would produce great images with a nice lens. that would be the overriding factor for most broadcasters that i’ve worked with. they care more about the feel of the image (composition, depth) than the format or res it was shot in.

also, they can be concerned with delivery. one broadcaster we work with requires all raw on HDCAM, even the stuff shot on HDV and P2. another broadcaster is accepting our raw P2 on hard drives because they’re not sure how they’re going to store it yet.

every broadcaster is different and their requirements are changing project by project. ask around or get it in writing before taking the plunge on new gear.
