John Frey – digital west video productions
July 2, 2005 at 4:03 amI have owned and operated a small production studio for the last 20 years involved in a wide variety of projects. Most of my clients have zero knowledge of cameras, tape formats, edit systems, etc., nor do they care. Beta SP and DV Cam quality has been just fine. In the real world of video production, few of us ever do a film-out. These are video projects made using video gear. However, every so often, a client DOES KNOW AND DOES CARE! These clients have been around high-end productions using high-end equipment and the final visual quality is very important to them. But most of all, they are paying for it. Small form-factor cameras are not acceptable to them, no matter how much money they might save by trying them. Quality 2/3 chip cameras are required. It is a continuous process of do-I buy or do-I rent, is every thing in-house or do parts of these projects get sub-contracted. Trying to wrangle a budget with great production values with these folk is a never-ending task, but the bottom line is, the client often calls the shots. It’s their money. But, I will still buy an HVX-200, hee, hee!

Did you happen to notice what projector they used?

Mike Most — account bouncing, bad address
July 2, 2005 at 5:32 pm>>Before the HVX-200 this was a QUESTIONABLE possibility at best (digital video is very pixilated when >>blown up).
It’s still a questionable possibility because contrary to all the pronouncements on this forum, the HVX200 doesn’t exist yet and nobody here or anywhere else has ever seen any images from it.

You’re absolutely right. We’re just months away from finding out.

What will be the chips’ resolution, Jan? -

Like I said in my last post, I agree with you. I don’t think the audience could tell the difference and if picture quality were and issue for them then “Blair Witch Project” wouldn’t have made two cents.
All my point was was that there is a difference between those cameras and those differences make them uncomparable when it comes to the abilities of the camera’s.
But to clarify, as far as audience is concerned, I agree, most can’t tell the difference and don’t care to know if there is one.

Yeah- There are certain pictures where digital video actually lends itself to the story. Blair Witch was one of em. 28 days later was another. I can’t imagine seeing either one of the films shot on 35mm or HD… they would be completely different.
Thanks for the reply Ryan… this has been one of those threads that’s really gotten me going. I love the cow.
Cheers,
Michael
