  • HVX-200 vs. Sony 900??

Posted by Mike Schrengohst on October 5, 2005 at 2:26 pm

    Hello,
We are in pre-pro and the director has asked me my opinion on the technical merits of the HVX-200. I had to say don’t know yet. Looks like we will have time to wait and see about the HGX. As soon as a direct comparision is made between HGX and Sony 900 I am all eyes. I know the Sony 900 will of course be better in most ways, but we are talking a Travel show with minimal crew.
We are going to shoot some tests on HDV next month. Any input would be appreciated.

What a mixture. It looks like coctail of flavors without Varicam.

My Director does not want to shoot 720P. He wants 1080.
The rental rates for Varicam were comparable to HDCAM.
He is in LA and has many productions already lensed with
a 900. He was intrigued with the HVX-200. Even if he goes
HDCAM I am sure we will shoot some b-roll with HGX.

I think this would be a great b-roll camera to the 900- though of course you’ll definitely see a difference in quality- vis a vis- difference in CCD size, lenses, compression schemes.

Make sure,You will bring one extra suitcase of Betacam tapes for Your
    Travel shoot.
If You want quality and 1080i(and weight) then HDCAM is the way to go.
But how about SD DVCPRO 50 gear???
Camera like Pana700 would be just great.
If mobility, weight and value for money picture is important, then You can not go wrong with Pana200.

One think for sure, if your director is speculating with 1/3 inch HDV 1080i camera, HDV 200 with 720p HD codec will be superior and if he love 1080i it’s there too, but on P2 only.
