HVX-200 & Low Light
Most reviews report that HD/HDV cameras do not perform as well in low light situations when compared to DV camera. I don’t recall reading how the HVX-200 performs in low light. Can anyone “enlighten” me?

You can play with the camera settings and get really good low light performance. If you just use the defaults, then it won’t do well. But my camera guys were able to get the Varicam and the HVX set up to match pretty well for a night shoot.
They did have some good lights, but it was still pretty dark.

Thanks, Shane. Sometimes, I’m asked (or forced) to shoot news-style in available light situations — corporate meetings and events that can’t be staged or repeated. Nor is there time to set lights, etc. I’m not sure any of the newer HD/HDV cams handle low, available light very well. Am I wrong?

That’s kind of a blanket statement that’s not neccesarily the case. HD cameras are the same as DV cameras- in the sense that they are all different. Some cameras have more low light sensitivity than others. But in those cases your image is going to be compromised already. I’d suggest some rentals and see which camera fits the sort of situations you’ll be in. The value of a good on-camera light for run and gun shoots cannot be overstated.

I’m glad to hear you had such success wth the HVX matching up with the Varicam and in low light. Any chance you might share what your guys did to the HVX to make it perform so well?
