Haven’t read too much regarding the audio ciruitry on the HVX 200. Does it record a clean, quiet signal? Signal-to-noise impressions of those using it thus far? If (horrors) one does record to DV, is the audio clean? To the P2 cards? I’m planning on using external mics (Tram lav, Sennheiser wireless, Sennheiser short shotgun on a boom, etc.) patched into the XLR inputs of the camera… not planning on using the onboard mic very much.

My HVX 200 is arriving from B&H on February 14 (Happy Valentine’s Day, Larry!)

I haven’t conducted extensive audio testing of my own yet, so I can’t answer this definitively and with comparisons yet. But there’s a report on one of the other forums; I don’t know how much I’m allowed to copy/paste so I’ll just quote the salient points:

“The audio. Oh my gosh, the HVX-200 has the best audio I have ever heard on ANY camcorder, even CineAltas and Varicams. The uncompressed 16 bit digital and the mic preamps and audio circuitry are exemplary, every manufacturer should take the hint and make their camcorders have audio this good. Even the ALC circuit is very good. The Z1 has decent audio but nowhere near the quality of the HVX-200. Same with the DVX-100A, while it has great audio, the HVX is superior. ”

This is quoted from forum user Dan Brockett. Ron, if copying a quote is prohibited, let me know and I’ll just point a link to his review; not sure of the etiquette of linking to a forum outside the Cow.

    Hi Barry:

That was me in that quote and yes, as I continue to shoot and listen to the footage, the HVX-200 seems to have really nice, clean audio. I don’t have access to the type of test instrumentation that Jay Rose does, perhaps he will hook it up and really test it for DV Mag soon? But anecdotally, the HVX sounds beautiful, I think that they might have even tweaked the headphone output.

I am monitoring on Genelecs and Mackie 824s in two separate bays, both sound great! Very impressed with the camera overall, other than the lcd screen is not so hot.
