I’ll try to make this short.

problem: when i capture an entire tape, i end up with about 30 independent clips that have lost about 5 seconds of footage between them.

    I’m using,
Sony HVR-V1U (footage shot at 1080i60)
    OS 10.4.11 MacBook Pro
    FCP 6.0.2
Capturing through FW400 from camera into mac, although running external HD’s on FW800 through separate PCI card

I have not been able to find any clear definitive answer to my problem.
I simply want to capture an entire tape, and all of it!
I keep on hearing “sensitive to timecode”………is there anyway to capture without breaks using FW400?

If not, how do people with MacBooks capture their HD footage?

    Edmund,

This is a common and well known issue, not just with the Sony V1U, but with all cameras that shoot HDV, as they record to tape using long GOP MPEG and create new metadata entry on tape every time the camera starts and stops. If you search back in time, both here and on the HDV Forum, you will see this issue going back nearly three years to the first release of the very first HDV cameras. When shooting you must allow for plenty of preroll/postroll between takes.

Does this go for XDCAM as well?

    Nope –

XDCam captures the images as files. Using the XDCam capture software, you just import the files to a folder and away you go. Every time you stop and start it starts a new file, but you don’t really lose any footage. You do need to allow 2-3 seconds of pre-roll unless you’ve set up the 10-second flash memory capture…otherwise your subject may be missing the first couple words of a sentence.
