Setup: Macbook Pro, Premiere Pro CS5.5.2, Sony HVR-Z1U. When I capture DV from the Z1, no problem. When I try to capture HDV it all looks fine, except that the capture window reports that its capturing to an MP3 file. When I stop capture, there is no file in the bin. Looking at the folder, there is only an MP3 file, that is useless BTW. any clues??? need urgent help!!!

Try unplugging and replugging the firewire cable while your HDV footage is playing in the camera.

Camera will default to DV mode when it is first turned on, and DV drivers will be loaded (via firewire) into the computer. You need to load the different HDV drivers, which will load when camera is in HDV mode. An easy way to make sure the camera is in HDV mode is to play an HDV tape. You can also switch from DV or auto mode to HDV mode in the manu.

I did all of the above except unplugging and plugging the FW cable with the camera on. Ive heard many stories of FW ports dieting on Z1’s for doing just that.

In any case, here is more info. I can capture HDV with no problem on iMovie and Final Cut Pro X. Not a glitch whatsoever. The Z1 is set to play HDV (not auto), down convert is off and the tape is HDV.

Oh, and BTW, I hooked it up to a Win7 PC running the same version of PP and it captures HDV with no problem also.

This is making me go crazy!

Saddly I never found one. I reverted to capturing on PC. Hope you have better luck.
