I need a single map of Europe that can be zoomed tight into little towns in little countries. Using Adobe Production Studio, I first tried to make a huge Photoshop image (about 3000×3000) but even at that size it got blurry when I zoomed in tight. Figuring I needed a vector image, I’ve been trying to use Illustrator to trace a gif map with the idea that I would then animate it in After Effects. But to get enough detail in the vector image the tiny town titles still look pixelated. After spending way too many hours on this it occured to me I’m probably approaching the problem all wrong, and that others must have had similar challenges. Obviously I’m trying to avoid drawing (from scratch) an entire map of western, central and Eastern Europe, but I really want to get that flying over/zooming in feel. Also I’m hoping to draw an animated line showing someone’s travels across the map. Any suggestions?

    Hi There,

This is one of the reasons that Google Maps is so popular and useful. There are not too many other ways to recreate a realistic effect without it taking up a LOT of time. As you realized, it would take a HUGH graphic to be far out and very close up. I like your idea of the vector graphics.

Off the top of my head a quick a good work around would be to create 2 graphics one ‘zoomed out’ graphic and one ‘close up’ Then when you zoom in, match your positions between large and small and add an effect transition-light burst, radial blur, etc. History Channel and Discovery Channel do this all the time.

    Good Luck,

Google maps is a good resource but if you really want a good topiographic image, why not try one of those satalite imaging services, you can getthe same quardinates from several varying scales, and the Like dood said do the transition flash thing… Clouds i find are good for this fake clouds..

PS thanks for gettting the indian jones song stuck in my head, it’ll make the daygo all thatmuch faster..

Thanks both of you. I am beginning to see how much work it will be to make everything vectors — especially with the level of detail I was hoping for. I’ll post any breakthroughs I have, but I think it’s likely I’ll have to resort to Plan B: the transition you describe between large and small.
