HuffYUV question from Mac person
Hi Everyone,
I’m in a pickle, I think. I have a client who is requiring a bunch of little .avi media files compressed with HuffYUV. I’ve dug around a bit and discovered that HuffYUV is only good on Windows (bummer…) and naturally I’m a Mac person. I can export my files from FCP as AVIs so no problem there, but how do I do the compression? I’ve got occasional access to a Windows machine although it’s not used for editing so I don’t think it has anything other than Windows Media Player on it. On the upside I can download/install software onto the machine if I need to. So, I’m wondering what I need to do to make this happen. Do I need some other kind of software to work with HuffYUV or is it a stand alone thing? Is there some mac equivalent that does the same thing as HuffYUV so I don’t have to rely on the limited Windows access I’ve got? If it helps here are the specs from the client:

Yeah, you’ll just have to do the compression on PC.
Since Huffyuv is a 4:2:2 codec, I’d render out to the FCP 8-bit 4:2:2 codec on the Mac, and then use a YUV-native rendering app like ProCoder to convert from the .MOV to the .AVI.

which is a variation and will serve you just as well which either come as an installer or as a standalone program in a zip file. Windows should unzip it, copy it to a folder and it should run. It is a free video editing prog and if you install huffyuv which is a codec and requires an external program to compress, it should allow you to export avis with compression. You can also set it up to a render queue if you have a lot of files to convert and then leave it. Email me if you have any problems -
