  • HPX500 offload 720PN via firewire?

Posted by Adam Smith on July 30, 2007 at 11:06 pm

My HPX500 and Octo-Core Mac both arrived today and it’s gonna be a day or two before I have things set up enough to test this, so…

I know you can offload P2 cards via firewire, but up till now I was under the impression it could NOT offload the native 720PN format files. Now I think I was confusing the while-recording firewire feed that would go to a Firestore or similar…

Can anyone confirm that you can indeed offload (firewire transfer the Mac) all recording formats through the camera?

    Thanks,

    -Adam

Yep- it’s just data over a digital connection. It will mount like a hard drive.

Seemed like that should be how it worked but the Panasonic literature was confusing about the issue, so either they overlapped the two functions of the Firewire out, or I misread.

Either way I’m glad the camera arrived before I ordered the $1800 P2 Drive, having dedicated gear is awesome but I think for now the bigger benefit lies in making the wife happy by putting that chunk of money back into the home improvements side of the bank account.

    Thanks much!

Another option is to mount a card reader in your Octo. This way you don’t tie down the camera to the edit system, and it may be faster. You can use P2 Genie to make the off-load process very fast and easy.

Yup- I find the P2 reader essential to workflow. The camera itself can of course be used to mount and transfer P2 Cards but then you are holding up your shoot until the transfer is complete.

What P2 Reader do you speak of? Something other than the offerings from Panasonic I assume?
