Activity Forums Panasonic Cameras HPX 2000

    Dear Group

    I need some help.

First off let me say I thought I would purchace the HPX500 with a better quality lens than offered in the bundles. (CAC lenses). But after seeing the 500 and the 2000 side by side at a Panasonic demo here in NYC I was almost certain it would be better to invest in the higher res imager, hi-res viewfinder and other higher end features. BUT doubt remains.

I’ve never shot with Panasonic cameras have always been a Sony guy in the SD world (as well as HDV) so I find myself hesitating. I’m not referring to price issues but quality here.
Was also wondering whether the over/under crank option in the 500 also worth weighing in deciding.

Does anyone have real world experience with both cameras who can provide some wisdom?

Does anyone know if any real reviews (not press release items) of the HPX2000 appeared yet?

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Best regards,
    Paul Colin

HPX-2000 is better made camera with better pictures..but it costs twice as much and does not have under/over crank.

Perhaps you should wait for new Sony XDCAM HD50….

I assume that camera will use mpeg2 compression recording on blu-ray discs.
What have you heard about it?

    Thanks Jiri.
Do you know whether it will have a over/under crank option?
Didn’t see that in the prelim specs at the site you referenced.
In any case I’m really more interested in The HPX2000.
Have you found any unbiased reviews (The Cow, etc.) on line?

By the way I will be doing post productiion work with this camera.
We have an 8 Core Pro Mac 3.0 Ghz, 7gigs RAM; Kona 3 (for output, monitoring and at present HDV upres), 4TB CalDigit HD Pro and a 23″ Sony HD monitor. So we’re ready to go!

    Thanks again,

    Hi Paul,

I’ve been dealing with the same question as you. I was all signed off on the 500, but after seeing an add in TV Tech. pushing the 2000, I deceided to do some research. I shoot super 16mm film and need to transition to HD, and quality is important to me. So, as of now, I’m hooked on the 2000. One thing to keep in mind is that HD TV’s are now made to show 1080p and they’ll only get better, so, the higher quality your camera, the better you’ll be in the long run. Of course, there’s always the 3000 at twice the price as the 2000!

Thanks so much for your response. Did you take the plunge and buy the 2000?
I’m about ready to call the dealer and order mine. Did you also consider the under/over crank issue? (something the 500 can do but this one can’t)

    Thanks again

No, I have not taken the plunge yet; I probably won’t until next year, though, it’s just because of finances right now, and I don’t have any shoots planned. I actually haven’t thought as much about the over/under crank thing as I sould. I would definitely use it for doing time-lapse stuff. For me, though, image quality outweighes everything else. I’m actually a hard core Sony guy but the Panasonic P2 has finally “converted” me…lol. And with the 32G cards, I’m ready to buy, too. I just wish they (the cards) weren’t so expensive; five of them can add another 7k to the price of the camera.

What lens have you been looking at?
I’m contemplating a Canon HJ17x7.6. Adds another $14,000 to the package … but good glass is always worth it.

I would definitely go with the HJ17x7.6 or the HJ11x4.7. If nothing else, I’ve learned that the glass is as important as the camera! As someone told me once: Your system is only as good as your weakest link. Boy, is THAT true! The one thing about buying good glass, is that once you’re in the HD realm (which we are), it will never be obsolete; you can use the lens on your next camera purchase.

Thanks again David for your input. I’m going to the dealer this week to compare the 500 and the 2000 with the 17×7.6 lens. I might have to opt for less resolution… it’s the 10 grand difference that will be difficult to manage. Though the 2000 is definitely a long term choice good for many more years than the 500… it’s a real conumdrum!
