    Hi guys,
I’m working on a no budget science-fiction film,
one of the effects is that some cuts between shots will be
    done by emulating a video-compression error/mistake.
It looks like when the new shot tears appart the last one, as if it was taking control over the pixels and assimalating them, or like when paint became alive and reassemeled.
It is a strange dynamic texture that dissapears after some seconds…
Do u have some idea what I mean?
I found out that this stuff happens when there are not enough keyframes in a compression stream, or if u play a file that is not e.g. downloaded fully.

Do u guys have any idea how I could start making a filter in AE?
    Is this super-complicated?
A work of months or hours?
I am the director/producer of the no-budget film and want to
find out this can be done, if necessary even by paying somebody to do it.
The effect is important to the plot which has to do with virtual reality.
    THX so much !!

A combiation of Block Dissolve and masking should do most of the trick in getting a pixelated/blocky look to parts of the screen. The difficult part is getting the blurry/watery streaks. For this, perhaps Compound Blur and Displacement Mapping may help with Fractal Noise used for creating the matte for both the compound effects.

    hi Roland
    thanks for your superfast answer.
This sounds very specifc(great!) but far beyond my level of ae knowledge.
How long does it take to make a filter like that ? Do you know where I could find people that could do this easily and for a small salary?
The film will be edited with final cut pro,is it maybe not the best solution to do this effect with AE?

Thank you so much for youre time, this forum is great!

    All the best
    George

Digieffects Fantazm-Bad Codec is exactly that.

Blockade and/or Aritfact from their “Damage” collection might work nicely as well.

I have done this before but only for a couple of seconds. I did it on a logo animation and this technique worked really well, though it is more time intensive (but a load cheaper!)

So i had a logo that i wanted to “glitch” up. I took the logo into photoshop and literally took parts of it and applied the pixelate filter to it. saved this on a different layer.
did this a few times with varying amount of pixelation and added some color variances to boot.
Once brought in i jus animated the layers over to the top of the original for a couple of frames then back, you kinda have to play with it a bit.
I then went and found a glitch sound effect from somewhere and bingo the effect was done and it was pretty believable.

If i were to do it again i would probably use a nested comp where i applied a time expression to it so it jumped about a bit more randomly.

Hope this is another method of use!
