How would you go about making a Bow?
Posted by Ken Latman on March 7, 2006 at 3:50 pmI’m trying to come up with a short 30 sec video for a screen saver and I thought of the idea of have a ribbon form into a bow on the screen. Is this something that could be done in AE? If so, are there any tutorials out there?

March 7, 2006 at 4:10 pmNo. You should use a 3D app such as Cinema 4D or Maya.
And before anyone suggests using Forge Freeform, I have had no success making it loop around on itself. If anyone can do a ribbon-bow in FF, I’d love to see it. 🙂

March 7, 2006 at 4:30 pmyou could divide it into peices with 3d stroke — but it definately would not look very flat.
Or even some clever bezier warping…stongly recommend using a 3d application. it’ll take less time and look better.

“It’s all a matter of how realistic you want this thing to be.”🙂

March 7, 2006 at 5:04 pmI’ve been thinking a doing a little sketching. What if instead of building a full bow I animate the strokes that form ribbons into loops and waves. Give like glimpses of how the thing is constructed and then end with a fully completed bow. Show abstracts of the process.
I guess what I’m thinking of is similar to how in MIB they didn’t show how the guy turned into a giant cockroach, but zoomed in a showed growing patterns and then revealed a giant cockroach.
I’ve prebuilt some forms in Illustrator and I could mask reveal them in AE to show a ribbon forming.
Any other toughts on Ribbons and Cockroaches welcomed.
