The type is 3D with some animated lighting (perhaps done separately in a 3D app, or perhaps done with an AE plugin that accepts lights or handles reflection mapping, such as Mettle ShapeShifter AE [link] or Zaxwerks Invigorator).

The 3D text, which is a 2D layer to AE, drives Form as you suggested.
