how to: view comp and precomp side by side
Posted by Jason W. miltt on July 8, 2009 at 9:23 amHi:
I have a master comp and several precomps inside. I would like to have 2 views, one with the main comp and next to it the precomp i am editing on the timeline. Now if i go inside the precomp both views change to it.
How do i do this?
Thanks.

July 8, 2009 at 2:42 pmhi, not got AE on this PC right now to check this, but I think it’s some combination of the below:
open both comps.
In the composition window of one comp, at the top there is a little drop down list. Click it and click ‘new comp viewer’.
Then select your other comp.
Then, from the same menu, choose locked.
Now you have 2 comp viewers. Now just rearrange them side by side in the usual manner.
Done!
I remember this being fiddly until you figure out how its done, hopefully I explained it right, but it does work.

July 8, 2009 at 6:57 pmI was delighted when this was posted, but…..
I cant get this to work… is it not available on AE CS3?
Do you mean the drop down twirly triangle at the top right of each actual composition panel? Because I cant find “new comp viewer” in this menu.
Thanks for all your help

July 8, 2009 at 7:23 pmOne of my favorite shortcuts:
To lock the current viewer, split the current frame, and create a new viewer of the same type in the new frame, press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+N (Windows) or Command+Option+Shift+N (Mac OS).
This tidbit and more are in the “Viewers” section of After Effects Help.
There were a lot of little improvements in ETLAT (edit-this-look-at-that) functionality in After Effects CS4.
