  • How to use z-depth to run two intertwining layers with each other?

    Hi guys,

I’ve used a lot of Premiere Pro and Photoshop, but never much after effects. So apologies if this is either very simple or not possible!

I have a rendered animation of a forrest with a separately rendered z-depth pass from 3DS Max. I’m trying to animate a car passing through the forrest. Moving between trees. I would noramlly use a mask in the initial render of the forrest, but I need to do multiple cars taking different paths.

I was hoping I could apply the z depth pass to the forest animation, and a second one to the car. And that would layer the two animations in the process? And then I could change the animation on the car accordingly?

If anyone has any idea that would be great, the only tutorials I can find are to do with adding blur.

    Thanks in Advance.

    Hi, Allan. Try this:

    – add your car layers above your forest layer.

-Use your forest depth map as a luma matte for each car.

-Use a levels effect on each depth map to crush the values and isolate the part of the image you want to use as the mask for that car.
