How to troubleshoot why project file isn’t opening?
I’m on AE 2014 on Windows 10. I have a project file that’s 350 MB, and it’s pretty consistently freezing when opening it, always at 85, 86, or 87%. I’ve tried resetting the preferences file, opening it while holding shift, deleting caches, opening it on different computers, updating Windows and my graphics card driver, and nothing works. I also tried importing it into a new project, but it stalls at 86% again. Very rarely it will open though, but I can’t figure out why.
On every computer I use it stalls at 86%, which suggests to me it’s a comp, a piece of footage in the file or an effect or something that’s freezing it. I have tried monitoring AfterFX.exe on Windows Resource Monitor’s disk view to see if I can catch the problem footage when it hangs, but it just kind of loads a bunch of files and then goes to nothing.
It started doing this about a week ago, but I can’t remember if I did anything then that made it stop working. In any case, it’s doing the same thing on the other computers where I haven’t changed anything for a while, so it suggests to me that the project file has become problematic. I tried restoring a version from the beginning of the month when it was working and that doesn’t work either. Super weird.
Is there a way that I can generate a log file of After Effects loading the project file to see where it hangs, either with AE or with Windows?

Do you have assets in the project, because you could move them all to another folder(s), and try opening the project. If it opens you know you have a corrupt asset, then just need to relink and discover which one it is.

Are all the project files on a singular local drive?

thanks. I tried disconnecting all local drives and disconnecting the network cable. It looks like the project file takes around 30 minutes to open only when the network cable is connected. Now this is weird because there are no references to networked files in this project file. It also happens when I’ve disconnected all network shares in Windows Explorer and kept the network cable connected, so I don’t know why being connected to the LAN would be freezing the program up. Any ideas?
After I posted the question originally I had been able to get around the problem. I opened the file on another computer (taking 30-50 minutes), reduced it in AE to get rid of unused files and then saved it as a new file. This did away with the problem until now.

Does the project reference any assets in a Creative Cloud library?

Hope it’s not your drive acting up.
Do you run anything else on that system other than AE?
Do you see the same results with Photoshop or Premiere?

I don’t use the Creative Cloud library. I use PS, Premiere, and a few other programs. I haven’t seen the same issue with other Creative Suite programs.
