  • how to transfer 29.97 to 23.98?

    Hi

I have a client who is working on a 23.98fps project on Final Cut.

They shot their rushes with Panasonic Varicam at the rate of 23.98 and I digitized them in using the Blackmagic NTSC dV 23.98 setting.

However all the archive footage consists of various formats and frame rates. So I have PAL Beta tapes, NTSC 29.97 Tapes. I order to integrate this footage into the 23.98 project, I captured them as native then did Quick time conversion to convert them into 23.98 footage. This seems to work for offline. However I need to get these tapes transferred properly for onlining on a non Final Cut editing system

Question is it OK to convert these 25. and 29 frame tapes to NTSC 23.98 footage? If it is what is the best format to transfer them onto. Digi Beta or DVC PRO. What kind of instructions do I need t give to the Dubbing facility.

    Thank you.

    Zee.

Take them to a professional dub facility and have the work done there. PAL to NTSC conversion, and even SD to HD UPconversion can be done there. Be sure to ask if they can.

I worked on a History Channel doc that was shot with the Varicam, but incorporated PAL VHS, DV and BetaSP footage. What we did was capture everything in their native rates(capturing only what was used in the cut), string together all the selects from those sources…so a timeline of PAL VHS, another of DV and another of BetaSP…and output those to tape. PAL VHS we output to PAL DV, DV to DV, and BetaSP to BetaSP. Then we took them to a post facility and had them convert the PAL DV to NTSC, then upconvert all of it to DVCPRO HD via a Terranex box.

Then we captured that DVCPRO HD tape and cut it into the show…eyematching shots. A pain, but what we had to do.

    Hi Shane

Thank you very much for the reply.

I understand from your reply that 24p is only a HD-dvc pro frame rate? Therefore all the digi beta, dv, and hdv tapes needs to be transferred onto HD-DVC Pro tape. or have I got it wrong?

    Also

Some of the footage incorparated into the 24p project comes from HD-DVC PRO 720P 30 tapes. Would these need to be frame rate converted too?

The project will be onlined on either Avid Nitris or Quantel EQ.

    Thanks a lot.

[Zeliha] “I understand from your reply that 24p is only a HD-dvc pro frame rate?”

Not at all. It is an HD frame rate, but also several DV cameras shoot that format as well.

Digibeta is 29.97 only. DV and HDV can be SHOT 24p, but this isn’t always the case. DV/NTSC runs at 29.97 and HDV most commonly runs at 59.94, although there are 24p models out there for both.

But, since your project is mainly DVCPRO HD shot with the Varicam, it is wise to make everything that one format, especially if you are converting DV and Digibeta to HD. But also check with the place doing the online and ask what they’d suggest, since they will be handling the online and using a different edit system than Final Cut Pro.
