How to soften a lense flare?
Hello.
I’m trying to soften a lense flare effect. I applied a lense flare to an adjustment layer, and I would like to soften the flare. I tried to use compound blur – blurring only the lense flare layer, but it applies it to all the layers below, not only the lense flare layer. Could anybody help me with this one?

Apply the lensflare to a black solid. Set blend mode to “screen”. Blur the lensflare.

Out of curiosity, why was it on an adjustment layer?

Probably because that works without having to change the blend mode. Works fine. Until you want to add effects to the lens flare.

Wow, it does work. Never tried that before. What is the math going in with the flare on the adjustment layer? Is it unmulted? Added? Screened?

no, i dig that, been doing it for years. I want to know the math behind the adjustment layer. It is obviously doing something similar to a screen. I’ve always used it just as a device to stack effects I want applied to the layers below but not as a layer with inherent transfer properties that were any different than an ‘over’ function or what AE calls ‘normal’.
