  • How to show multiple video clips at same time?

Posted by Bruce Mackown on September 8, 2013 at 6:15 pm

    In the following youtube video:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssCQkwHNEp4

you can see that the editor has put multiple video clips showing at the same time at the following time points

    1:00
    1:37
    1:43
    1:50 (my favorite)

Actually I think some instances have still images, but it should be the same approach whether your using stills or video right? I was wondering what is this effect called. Maybe if I just knew what it’s called I could find a how to achieve this effect video on youtube. Or possibly someone here knows the basic steps to achieve it.

Thanks again for all your help guys and gals!

This is called picture in picture (loads of them in Youtube)
There are many ways to do this:
animate the picture superimposed over the video
    Use animated track mattes.

There are several subtleties but the basic methods are straight-forward:

    – Insert the clips on different tracks in the same sequence.
    – Scale the size with the Motion effect.
    – Trim image dimensions with the Crop effect.
    – Set the Position to locate and animate each clip as desired; consider the video frame to be a grid with coordinates (0,0) in the upper left corner and (w,h) in the bottom right corner.

It’s best to just spend time trying out different techniques.
