  • How to send large video files?

Posted by Yotam Morciano on May 31, 2016 at 9:15 am

    Hi,

My company is interested in doing a video contest, where users of our services will send us impromptu testimonials about their experiences using our product, which we will then use for promotional purposes (the best entry will receive a prize). The issue is that the customers will need to upload their videos and send them to us, but uploading a video from one’s phone takes a long time, and I fear this will decrease participation in the contest.

Is there an app that provides users with a fast video upload process from mobile devices while not compromising too much on quality? Is it worth it to look into an app that can shrink the video files? Ideally we don’t want to limit the length of testimonials to 30 seconds, but a full HD file that was shot on mobile with a length of one to two minutes can be half a gigabyte and that’s very large to upload.

    Thanks!

    Hi Yotam…

So you want in phone encoding to reduce the file size prior to upload?

Thank you Alex. Basically yes, but it’s not a must. The main thing for us is to simplify the process of sharing a video file. That’s what we are after. A complicated process will include transferring the video file to a desktop computer and then upload it for several hours to a cloud service or YouTube. Also, as a video editor, I would prefer not to down convert the original file to much.

I use WeTransfer for all my large file transfers. Works great and support mobile.

    Hi Walter, thanks for replying.

So am I, WeTransfer is a great service indeed. The snag is I’m not sure people will have the patience to wait an hour or two for the upload to finish. However, I guess that there are no shortcuts here.

    Hi…

    similar to dropbox is sendspace.

Where dropbox doesn’t have an API….Sendspace does.

If you are handling your content submission through a web interface, Sendspace could probably be integrated pretty easily.

It doesn’t make files any smaller….
but for your submission purposes, the end result would be that it could probably handle the larger files in a way that doesn’t require any additional user intervention…(adding additional phone apps or navigating to a site)…
