  • How To Replace Audio Without Re-Compressing Video???

Posted by Jon Swanson on May 26, 2010 at 9:12 am

I have a .mov clip that needs the audio replaced
I would like to do this without re-compressing the video
Is there any way to do this without losing video quality
If anyone could help that would be awesome
    Thank you very much

    Hi Jon,
If the audio of the clip is PCM, you won’t have any problem to do it in FC.
Just need that the sequence match the clip setting so you can export without re-compression.

Easier still – you can use Quicktime Pro. Open both the audio and video into QT. Show Movie Properties on the video, highlight the audio track and click Delete. Switch to the audio and select all, copy. Then go to the video, park the play head on the correct in point and under Edit, choose Add to Movie. Check sync and such, then Save As (flattened movie).

Awesome, this is the answer i was looking for.
Do they make quicktime pro for snow leopard?
I used to have it but when i upgraded to snow leopard there is no place to put my product registration number
I can’t find movie properties on the regular version

When I upgraded, I was able to keep my Quicktime Pro 7 – you may have it in your Applications > Utilities folder. If it’s not there, I think you can just load your upgrade disc and choose to install Quicktime Pro 7.

This was the perfect solution. Thank you so much for posting! I’m so glad I didn’t have to go through any unnecessary compressing.

I wonder if this is actually working for me. I opened my 88 minute pro rez file in QT Pro, replaced the audio, now I am ‘save as’ing to a different name. Does it sound right that it’s taking 1 hour to save? Is it re-encoding? Because that would be bad.

Sounds right, considering how large the file is. Maybe you have slow disks? Better to save to a different disk than the one where your sources are, to ensure fastest save. It’s basically taking however long a file copy would take, considering it is copying the essences from two files (video and audio) into a new QT. It is not recompressing (as long you did not choose EXPORT and instead chose SAVE AS SELF CONTAINED).

Yep! It took a while, but it did indeed work. Looked great too. Thanks all for the tip. Saved me lots of time.
