  • How to render mono audio rather than stereo (video MP4’s)

Posted by James Lewis on July 9, 2010 at 6:40 pm

    Hi,

I’m uploading MP4 videos (rendered with Vegas) to YouTube, but after the YouTube conversion the audio becomes very distorted. I’ve read that uploading videos to YouTube with mono rather than stereo sound might prevent this distortion after YouTube has processed it.

My question is: how do you render MP4’s in Vegas with mono sound? I can’t find the option for mono under the Sony AVC setting.

    Thanks.

One way would be to take your “selection edit too” (the one with the arrow pointing up) and highlight all the audio on your timeline and then right click on your audio track, go to the channels drop down and click on “combine”

Render it and just don’t save when you close the project or save your project with a different name.

Apparently neither the Sony AVC or MainConcept AVC support mono audio. You could always render to WMV and use mono audio.

Damn, I thought that might be the case. Unfortunately, MP4 is the format that delivers the best looking video on YouTube, but no matter what I try YouTube crunches the audio something rotten.

Any further suggestions on how I continue using MP4 but achieve better audio results on YouTube?

Thanks for your help everyone. It’s always nice to know there are others willing to lend a hand in dire circumstances.

    Peace,

    James

What you might try and do as Roger suggested it to make your audio mono in your Vegas project. If there are any problems like phase cancellation, you will hear them in your project before you upload. Correct them first and then render to MP4. Since your audio will now be mono, you will get the same audio rendered to each audio channel and that might correct the problem with YouTube.

Come to think of it, all of my YouTube videos are tutorials that I have created with Camtasia and since it’s just me talking on a mic I record them in mono but I render to Sony AVC MP4 and they sound fine. Making them mono in Vegas might just solve your problem. (it’s worth a try)
