  • How to Render AVI file with an alpha?

Posted by Steven Benton on April 25, 2008 at 4:34 am

    Hello Everybody!
    I need some help.
I’m making some graphics that need to be used on a Chyron Duet.
I’m using AE CS3 on a Mac. I need to render an AVI files with an alpha. I tried to use
the file export to avi selection, but there is no option for alpha.
I searched, but all I see is info on how to use AVIs in AE.

Best to use the Make Movie function as you’ll have more output options available.

Once you’re in the Output Module dialog, choose Video for Windows and then for Format Options select No Compression as your CODEC.

In the Output Module Settings dialog, ensure that you select RGB+Alpha in the Channels dropdown menu.

    Thanks for replying so quickly
I don’t see an option for rendering video for Windows. I have studio bundles of
    AE7 and CS3 on a Mac.

    Hi Steven
Unfortunately, I’m not on a Mac. Can you check if Flip4Mac has a free Video for Windows output download? Otherwise, it’s a paid applet.

You will also want to see if rendering to sequenced files does the trick for you.

    Cheers

Render as a 24bit targa sequence with rgb+alpha enabled…..the Duet user will then import and convert the seq to avi format.

    Thanks a million,
    Dave

I’m trying to do the same thing. I’m using AE 6.5. I can’t use a targa sequence because I need the audio that goes with the clip. Does anyone have a suggestion?

You have to render the audio file as a separate file from the 32bit targa seq………..make sure it has the exact same number of frames as the targa sequenœ……..the Duet op will marry the two files together.

    Thanks a million,
    Dave
