  • How To Remove .mov Extension?

Posted by Laura Hayes on January 5, 2009 at 5:11 pm

My last version of FCP exported clips without any file extension, and since upgrading all clips have been exporting with a .mov extension. I would like to stop this, for the sake of continuity and neatness more than anything else, but can’t figure out how.
I’d greatly appreciate anyone’s help in this matter.

    Thanks!

It is much better file management to leave the .mov extension intact. That way it is absolutely clear what type of file it is just by looking at it. Also, if the file is used on another computer, particularly a PC, the computer will be able to recognise the file type.

You can remove the .mov extension (although I would advise against it by:

Checking the ‘hide extension’ box (in the bottom left hand corner when saving as a quicktime conversion

Thanks for your response. I have tried unchecking this box as I export the file, but the .mov still shows up once the file has been exported to another folder on the computer.
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

‘”I have tried unchecking this box as I export the file…”

You must make sure this box is checked, not unchecked.

Apologies for the typo, I meant I have tried checking this box, so that the extension is hidden. But as I said earlier, the extension still remains once i have exported the file to another folder. I would like to know how to avoid having this extension at all, rather than just hide it.
