  • How to remove edge on a “Alpha Invert Matte” ?

Posted by Justin Mettam on October 11, 2013 at 4:35 am

I am trying to key out the character so all that is left is his ground contact shadow. So I did a Alpha invert Matte on the beauty pass to cut out the character from the ambient Occlusion pass and then keyed it all onto a white solid. As you can see from my screen grab I am left with a fine hairline around the edge. What is the technique to remove this edge ?

I am guessing I should crush the levels on the Alpha of the layer I am using as a matte ? Is there a better approach ?

    Use a Matte Choker

I would extend the alpha of the matte layer outward some using either matte>simple choker or channel>minimax set to maximum operating on the alpha channel.

This may eat into the contact shadow some in which case you could roto a copy of the matted ambient occlusion pass to bring it back.

Thanks for responding. I ended up using this light wrap tutorial that someone posted.

Years later and this helped me. Thanks. I used minmax with operation set to minimum and radius of 25 (depends on footage) and channel set to minimum
