  • How to quickly cycle through text?

Posted by Douglas Curran on July 17, 2009 at 6:01 pm

Using After Effects 7.0, I want to create a comp that cycles through about 60 different text words in about 3 seconds. I suppose I could achieve this by making 60 different text layers, but it seems like there should be an easier way. I have VERY little experience using Expressions, but a little voice tells me that’s the way to go. . . . Any advice?

There are dozens of approaches, here’s one of the originals from Trish Meyer, AE2.5 or so:
    1. Create your text in Illustrator as narrow, tall comp.
    2. Make each text line a separate item and space them exactly 100 pixels apart.
    3. Import AI file into AE.
    4. Set hold keyframes to move this layer 100 pixels vertically a the rate you wish them to change, Copy and paste them in batches till you have all of the lines of text moved through the comp.
    5. If you need to change the rate of change, select all of the keyframes and option-drag one of them.

    1. Make a text layer
    2. Twirl down the text parameters
    3. Keyframe the ‘Source Text’ parameter

So that’s what that Source Text parameter is for. Thank you!
