how to project manage Arri RAW files
Hello,
I’m not very experienced with Premiere Pro CS6 but I was trying to use it to selectively copy arri RAW clips from my backup drives to a server. My plan was to load an EDL into Premiere, link the offline clips to the Arri RAW media, then use project manager to consolidate only the footage I needed to my shared storage.
However when I use the project manager it copies the entire source clip, it doesn’t consolidate the clip to the used ranges.
Has anyone tried using the project manager with Arri RAW media before? Is this a known bug or am I doing something wrong?

I assume you wanted to trim your project and use handles on footage? This would mean that, under ideal conditions, you end up with less and smaller files.
The Project Manager cannot trim all file types. Unfortunately, I can’t find a list of file types Premiere does trim to back up that claim. I could be A) wrong or B) someone needs to chime in with more info.

I know that the PM wont trim files that use a lot of compression like H.264 . I am not sure this applys to Arri files.

Actually, Premiere Proyect manager works fine with most intraframe codecs, like DV, but not with interframe like h264. I really don´t know what happens with raw files in PPM, but you could try making this job with Prelude instead, as it can extract in/out marked footage and ingest or convert it on the fly to make your proxies or offline clips.

On some of these file types, the ability of PPro to trim is dependent on the access the manufacturer allows to their media within the file, but as has been mentioned, many intraframe (long GOP) codecs are unable to be trimmed.
ARRIRAW is an interesting case, even in contrast to RED raw (which cannot be trimmed either), as it’s a frame sequence instead of a video file in the same way that RED footage is. I would think that DPX or .ari frame sequences would be super easy to trim…
Now that my curiosity is piqued, I want to check on this myself…

Strange, didn’t know RED RAW couldn’t be trimmed in Premiere. They can be trimmed in Redcine-X Pro.

Well…Adobe can only trim what they have access to, and in most cases, if it’s a file format from a camera that can’t be “written” by a computer (you can’t render RED raw or ARRIRAW out of After Effects for instance), then the necessary access to “trim” the file probably isn’t available either.
RED can do whatever they want in their own software, but they have to make access available in the SDK for someone else to get that capability of course…
