  • How to Print to Tape?

Posted by Jon Boffa on September 14, 2006 at 10:36 pm

I’ve never Printed to Tape before. I shot footage with Sony HDR-FX1, edited in HDV, and now wish to master on mini-DV in NTSC 4:3 format.
I’ve connected the FX1 via FireWire (the way I capture from it to begin with), and when I select Print to Tape it doesn’t seem to be identified by the camera in VCR mode.

What am I missing? I expect that when FCP is ready to output the image to whatever device my FW cable is attached to that the device would then recognize this signal, but there is nothing recorded or seen in the camera’s monitor.

Please help as I need this video on mini-dv so it can be aired on cable in less than two weeks!

    As always, THANKS!

The easiest solution for YOU. Create a new DV-NTSC sequence. Copy your HDV sequence into your DV-NTSC sequence. Render the sequence, you do have two weeks. Make sure your A/V settings are set correctly for DV-NTSC especially your video output. Set your camera to DV. output your DV Timeline to your camera.

    Thanks.
Just so I’m set-up correctly on the new DV-NTSC sequence, I set the following:
    Frame size: NTSC (4:3)
Pixel Aspect Ratio: NTSC – CCIR 601 / DV (720×480)
    Field Dom.: Upper (Old)
    Editing Timebase: 29.97
    QuickTime Video Settings
Compressor: ??? (It’s currently set to HDV 1080i60 b/c was just working in that… which setting should I use, or does it not matter?)

Does everything look correctly set up?

I think I figured out the compression issue (saw DV/DVCPRO NTSC on list…).

Now, I followed all the steps. It’s only :30 commercial so rendering time wasn’t all that bad.
But, when I go to Print to Tape, it says HDV Print to Tape not compatible.
I looked at the Item Properties of the footage and its still 1080i, and all my A/V and sequence settings and camera mode are in DV / NTSC mode.
Do I have to down-convert it first?
    Thanks

if you shot and edited it in HDV then master it in HDV

    Field dominance, lower!

Also, you don’t have to mess with all that. Press ctrl+q and choose the DV easy setup. Then create a new sequence.
