How to physically drag/manipulate clips in timeline?
On my former systems, Avid Liquid and Pinnacle Liquid (7?) I was able to remove sections of audio and/or video directly in the timeline using a razorblade tool.
Likewise, I could select a section of the sequence and move it down the timeline (often to an arbitrary spot, just to give me some room to play with the area before piecing it back together).
I am learning Avid Free DV now, and I am completely confused about how to manipulate clips in this manner in the timeline. Can it be done? I’ve searched CreativeCow, Avid.com, and the “Avid Made Easy” book by Jaime Fowler.
I typically use 3-point editing to build my sequences. My projects are typically news packages or resume tapes. Especially with resume tapes, I want to play with the order of clips without having to start from scratch each time.

At the bottom left of the timeline you’ll see a yellow arrow and a red arrow. Those are how you move things, the yellow arrow will splice the clip in where you drop it on top of another clip. The red arrow will override the current clip (Probably the style you are used to).
In order to cut the clip, you need to use the splice tool. I forget what its called exactly, but if you go to the fast menu below the video viewport, theres a fast menu button. Click that, and it’ll bring up a menu, in that menu is a button for cutting. (Sorry I cant be more help with this, if you google fast menu you’ll probably get a photo of it.)

FreeDV? That was EOL’d a number of years ago. Where/how did you get a copy of that?
FYI, Avid now has a 14-day Free Trial of Media Composer.

Thanks for the help. I’ve got it now. The book Avid Mady Easy by Jaime Fowler comes with a disc that has the program as well as product key/serial information. Mine was sealed in the original envelope in the back of the book.
Check Amazon.com if you are looking for a legit copy of Free DV. Lots of private sellers still have the book (and probably the disc that goes with it).
