How to overwrite edit in FCP like AVID
Hi –
In FCP, if I do an overwrite on V1/A1, it leaves all the media on V2+ & A2+ untouched. I want to delete all of it, instead of going back and manually deleting that media. In AVID, it will delete all the extra track media if you want, so you have a “clean” slate where your new ftg is.
Is there a way to delete all tracks with an overwrite edit in FCP?

Are you cutting one sequence into another? because an Avid will do this if there is FILLER in that sequence, and you are cutting over FILLER. Because FILLER in Avid is basically BLACK leader…it is a “physical” thing. Where that “nothing” in FCP is just that, nothing.

No – just trying to cut media (clip with V1/A1 in this case) over top of existing tracks.
In Avid, incoming media with V1/A1 will knock V2+/A2+ out, but in FCP it keeps V2+/A2+.
Isn’t there a way to knock all the tracks out – essentially to say overwrite everything?

In my experience, it only does this if you have something mapped to those tracks. OH…autoselect? God, been a while. If you have those tracks HIGHLIGHTED in Avid as tracks you will be affecting, it will wipe out what is on them if you overwrite, right? I always hated that…personally. I always had to undo and UNSELECT those tracks.
Sorry, can’t do that in FCP.

Thx – oh well, will have to use the poor man’s solution.
Personally, I would rather unselect tracks than not have the option to clear out the media. It’s rare when I want to keep other elements on the timeline – if I did, I’d do an insert edit.

I hear you on that one. Not sure which method saves effort in the long run. Avid does for this particular edit.
With the key sequence of I, O, Delete, X, F10 you can get there. Probably at least two more clicks per edit.
