    hello all.

i am getting a laptop and want to connect it to my desktop
    as an external storage.

i am going to get a pci firewire card and was planning on
connecting the two via firewire, and do my effects in AE on
my laptop and save to my desktop. however, i do not know if
this will actually work. does anyone have any suggestions?

    thanks in advance. Matt

You want to put your desktop into Firewire Target mode. Here’s some info: https://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583

Assuming this is OSX/MAC. Let Bonjour do the work and it will auto detect your other computers on the network. Then just drag to a folder you created on the desktop computer.

If you just want to use the desktop as simply a storage device, you could use target disk mode like the previous post mentioned, but I’d just get a nice LaCie FW drive to store your stuff on instead.

Buy yourself an 802.11g Wireless Router, and a wireless card for the laptop if it doesn’t already have it. Any name brand router will include instructions for installation of a Windows network. When you are moving large volumes of information, plug into the router with a cable. When you’re not, you just turn the laptop on for general file sharing over the wireless network. Plus, you can annoy your wife/mom/significant other by checking your email at the dinner table.

How weird – just realised I typed “Mom”, and I’m not an American. That’s cultural brainwashing for ya!!! 🙂
