  • How to mix 720p with 1080p?

Posted by Danny Mulen on January 22, 2012 at 5:22 am

I shoot 720p on my Canon 60D DSLR because its the only way to get 60 FPS (for slow-mo in post). I’ve shot 1080p 24fps for the scenes where I didn’t need slow-mo (which is most of them). This is for youtube.

Do I make my composition 720p and scale the 1080 down? Or do I make it 1080 and scale the 720 up? Thanks.

You can downscale 1080 to 720, where you won´t have quality loss but your master edit will be in 720p res., or you can upscale 720 to 1080 losing quality in 720 footage unless you apply any filter like MB Instant HD, rendering time will be longer but it will work fine and you will be able to save a master of your edit at the highest resolution (1080p). Then you can export to different res. and formats based in this high res. timeline.

If your destination is youtube – go with a 720p sequence.
You’ll have room to move on your 1080 as a bonus.
