  • How to manage AVCHD from Disk Drives not Camera

Ok, so we have a new little Canon HFS10. Importing and transcoding from avchd to pro-res, works fine.

HOW are we supposed to work a large project where we will be on the road, and downloading the camera to external disk drives daily. I have read a few allusions to the fact that FCP can not work with this format if not captured from the camera’s internal drive or an SD card.

Isn’t there a way to replicate the metafile path of these devices so that a hard drive can be used to transcode material for FCP Studio II editing. When I navigate to the file copies in their folder structure to a drive, they are greyed out to access by FCP.

Does one need to use TMPG to transcode to Quicktime or some other workflow… I gather, hopefully that someone, or even apple, may be starting to figure this path out by now. We intend to edit, mixing the ProRes’d AVCHD footage with Sony Z1 HDV footage. Or we hope to at any rate. HDV will also be transcoded to ProRes.

Can the footage be transfered back to an SD card to capture.. sounds really silly, but could be a job for interns..!!

    Thanks
    Jim

Just copy the whole card, with the entire folder structure, into a folder on your hard drive. Back it up so your have a spare, and then reuse the card. You can access that folder directly from the log and transfer window. Whoever told you you must access the media from the camera or a card reader was mistaken.

    All the best,

Prety sure I have done that properly, and the files are greyed out, can’t transcode them. Is there a trick to how the folder structure of the top folder should be, or something i might be missing.

    thanks Tom

Are you using the Add Folder button in the log and transfer window?

The folder structure must be exactly as it was in the card. The simplest way is to drag all the contents of the card into the folder on your hard drive.

    Jim,

FCP finds AVCHD files difficult to manage if the file structure has been changed in any way.The easiest
way to maintain the camera file structure is to make a disk image of the camera when you connect it to the computer (Finder/Application/Utility/Disk Image). Imagine Products Inc. (https://www.imagineproducts.com/ShotPut.html) have a software product called ShotPut Pro which they market as a Digital Media Offloader. which allows you to backup your camera files to a number of disks simultaneously. the great thing about the software is that it works with any HD Digital Video Media.

    Hope This helps

Hey, tanks Adrian, the Imagine product is a great, idea, forgot about that, I gather too that it may work on a pC based file capture system… and then still be able to mount or be organized on the Mac after shooting ends, and post starts..

    anxious to test this path.
    regards
    Jim
