  • How to make the black backgroud invisible in a rotobrushed video?

This should be an easy one. I have a video of a painted gourd spinning around. I’ve used the rotobrush tool to mask out the background, so I can put the gourd over a spacy background. I did a pre-render of the gourd, and it looks great, with perfect edges. But, when I bring in the prerender .avi, its background is black, not transparent. How do I make this black go away so I can see the gourd in the sky?

You need to use an output module preset with an alpha channel, which will encode and preserve the transparency.

Try either the High Quality with Alpha (ProRes 4444) or Lossless with Alpha preset.

Personally, I’d suggest ProRes 4444 for almost all cases — it’s visually indistinguishable from a lossless codec, but significantly smaller on disk.
