How to make multiple video screens
Posted by Austin Steele on March 13, 2009 at 11:36 pmSo I want to have multiple screens of footage. I want two screen of different video or photos with motion playing side by side. What’s best way to do this? I have motion too if thats the a better way to do it and not too complicated. Anyone have any links for this? Thanks!

March 14, 2009 at 2:43 pmYour question is quite confusing. Multiple screens has always refered to having multiple computer screens conected to one computer.
There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.

March 14, 2009 at 2:48 pmYou mean like a multiple screen display with each screen playing back a different element, but in sync with each other?
You create multiple timelines in FCP with matching timecodes and edit the appropriate elements in each timeline. Then you will require the correct hardware on the playback side to display the video correctly. There are folks using Mac Minis, Apple TV and other dedicated hardware, usually controlled by a central computer, to play back the images across multiple displays.

March 16, 2009 at 7:30 pmSorry for the confusion I think you definitely misunderstood me. What I want is to be able to have two different shots play simultaneously side by side. Like having a split-screen. So I need to resize the video so that it is smaller and dosen’t take up the whole screen. Does this make sense? I know this is a common task but I’m not familiar with the term.
Does anyone know a good link for this? I also have motion if this is more of a job to be done in motion. Thanks!

March 16, 2009 at 10:31 pmYou should do as Walter suggests and cut two timelines one for each screen. Then drag those two sequences onto two video tracks. Use the motion tab to reduce their size and position them as you like.

March 24, 2009 at 5:57 pmOpen a third sequemce and drag one edited sequence to the first video track of the sequence 3 and then drag the second edited sequence to the video track above the first. Now, you’ll only see the top track so open that track in the viewer and change its size in the motion tab. Now click on the lower track and do the same thing. You can resize and reposition each as you like. If you want a background, put that on V1 and drag the others up to V2 and V3.

November 24, 2010 at 4:37 amHey there,
I came across this blog about multiple tv screen outputs. I am wanting to set up 5 different screens and have them project different pictures at the same time–you said you can do this with final cut pro – I have version 7 – also you mentioned specific playback hardware..?? I’m doing an installation for my thesis so any help would be awesome — Thanks!!!!
