  • how to make HD look like vhs?

Posted by Andre Luis on November 27, 2008 at 3:24 pm

yeah, the subject of this post is a bit weird.

thing is: I shot a video using hd and now the client wants it to look like amateur vhs video.

is there any FCP filter that makes this look like vhs? Or some tip that I could use?

    thanks!

Bad TV should do it. What version of FCP are you using?

    All the best,

Why not do it the old fashion way and lay it out to vhs and bring it in again, done. Do a test. Get the cut approved and go.

And if you want even worse quality just do a couple of straight VHS to VHS dubs (or FCP->VHS->FCP->VHS) until you get the level of degradation that you (and the client) want.

My standard recommendation on all types of format “looks”: go gently.
A little of these effects goes a long way. Your audience is not stupid and a nice effect that was supposed to enahnce your look and feel can rapidly become a tedious and distracting or boring affectation.

    thanks for your suggestions guys!

in the end, I decided to record the final movie on s-vhs and put it back to the computer. It worked great!

I was thinking too much about filters and even forgot there was this much easier (and in my opnion, better) way. Thanks again!
