Not sure if adobe after effects is the right or only software to use to do this, but basically I want to make a house deconstruct.. either to make the parts of the house just fall off or to have the parts explode without their being an explosion. Can anyone guide me in the right direction? Greatly appreciated.

Brian Maffitt actually did this in an early tutorial for his wonderful Shatter plugin.

He went to a subdivision and carefully match-photographed as many homes as he could find in various stages of construction. Then he built a composite image of different masked layers, rendered them as standalone movies with alphas, and applied Shatter in various shapes as appropriate to the details being destroyed. Big horizontal rectangles for the siding, smaller rectangles for the roofing shingles, glass for the, umm, windows, really small hexagons for stuff in the yard.
It was lovely ad not very complicated.

    Right.
You would need to find a copy of Brian’s original Atomic Energy filter training or the AE4 series from Total Training. You might try their website to see if any archival stuff is available.
