  • How to link a TEXT layer to text in an external file

Is it possible to use expressions or some other method to change text in an AE comp that is based off of text in an external file, lets say a text (.txt) file. Similar to how you can have placeholder fields in a WORD doc that is linked to an external database.

I am looking to automate text across different videos and need a simpler way to handle it without having to hand type or paste it every time.

I’m almost positive this is possible using AE’s scripting functionality, however I don’t know how to do it myself (I really would like to learn more about scripting). I think Dan Ebberts would be the man to talk to. He hangs out on this forum, but you might have better luck in the AE Expressions forum.

This isn’t lined to a data base, but this is my favorite script to put text into AE:

Scroll down to “crg_Text_from_File.jsx”. It has the option of putting each line of text on it’s own layer, or all text lines on one layer. Very Nice. Oh, yes it needs a text file (.txt) to work.
